The Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary along with the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary forms the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. As a wildlife park it is much better than the adjoining Muthanga but tourism has really not taken off here as it lies in the shadow of Nagerhole. This park is home to over 900 elephants and they can be seen very frequently on the game tracks. Since there is not much tourist infrastructure here in the form of organised treks and sightseeing trips, it a do-it-yourself approaches here. 

You can drive your vehicle inside for a limited distance of 20 km. A guide is provided at the entrance of the sanctuary. The tracks become very slushy during monsoons and hence it is best to avoid this place during the months of July and august. Alternatively you can hire a guide and walk around the park, this way you should be able to go deeper into the sanctuary and you may sight the elusive herd of elephants here.
