Pookote Lake

Pookote Lake is a beautiful lake situated in Wayanad about 3 kilometres from the valley view and about a kilometre from Vythiri. As you travel from Lakkidi to Vythiri you cross a small bridge and as soon as you cross this bridge a motor able road on the left takes you to the Pookote Lake. You will need to drive for around 1.5 Kilometres before you finally reach this place. The road is draped in lush greenery and there is a parking just outside the Lake.

The Lake is a pretty big one with a walkway all around it. There are lots of lilies in the lake which makes for excellent photo ops. This lake can be crowded with holidaying couples and families on weekends. You can hire a pedal boat or row boat for Rs-50/20 minutes. A pedal boat can seat two is a perfect romantic getaway. You can steer the boat to one of the corners where there are lilies and you will get some real good photo ops. There are some good-looking birds in this lake which is again worth photographing.

Once you are done with the boating, if you have time take a stroll along the walkway built around the lake. It is very peaceful and soothing. Once you get far, you will find yourself alone in midst of lush green trees and the lake in the background. You can spend a lot of time just looking at the lake at this place.

There is a small attached garden to the lake. The garden is not big but has a few nurseries which sell plants. If you like gardening then this is a place to pick up some real good roses, dahlias, and daffodils.

There is also an aquarium adjacent to the lake. We could not visit it as we missed it completely.

You should also spot by at the Uruvu Eco Shop. This shop sells a lot of handmade products made by tribal women. Products made of of over two dozen varieties of Bamboo are a speciality here. You can find shirt hangers, wine bottle covers, coasters and many other things made out of bamboo. This place also sells gift packets of spices, pickles and forest honey.

It was almost four in the evening when we left the Pookote Lake, so we decided that we will head to Kalpeta and spend the night there. Kalpeta is the district headquarters of Wayanad district and is a good place to stay. It has many hotels and good places to eat.

We usually preferred to stay at the Woodlands there. It is located bang in the centre of the town and is easily accessible, has parking space and the rooms are pretty good. The rates are different during the off season and peak seasons (We once paid 1000 bucks and once 1400 or something around that amount). The breakfast is included in the room tariff and you are treated to a sumptuous buffet breakfast consisting of Idli, Dosas, Puri, Appam and coffee.
